Flat for Sale - 2010

I had the inspiration for this painting early in 2010 after falling on ice in Bristol and breaking my humerus (upper left arm).

Thoughts started to materialise during waiting times at the ortho clinic of a block of flats sitting on top of a shop selling faulty discount fireworks and on either side shops selling paper and wood - combustible materials and the 'optimist' trying to sell a flat.

If you look carefully at the picture you may think that the building itself resembles more than just a block of flats?!! Can you see which one is for sale?

The washing line is an element that always features in my paintings and adds interest and a human touch to the painting.

I hope you enjoy this painting for 2010 as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Ideas for pictures often start as a collection of sketches of things that I have seen. I then create a composition in my mind that I think would work. "Often I start sketching directly on to watercolour paper with a fine pen, letting the lines do the work and form the framework of the picture". Colour elements follow and start to bring life to the painting. Shading and tonal colour adds dimension to the framework of shapes.
